Background

The manufacturer of this relatively inexpensive outboard had been faced with spiraling labor and parts costs, yet had to keep the distributor price at the level needed for a moderately priced product. In addition, the nature of a two-cycle engine is such that operating vibration and field maintenance problems are definite factors.

Solution

The manufacturer used a #10-32 x 13/16 TAPTITE steel screw to retain the starter pulley wheel in its housing due to their superior prevailing locking torque to resist vibrational loosening. An 80 to 90% thread engagement can easily be achieved at relatively low and uniform drive torques producing a deep, stronger perfectly mated fit without the possibility of cross threading.

Customer Benefit

The use of a TAPTITE fastener has provided the manufacturer with lower-in place assembly costs by eliminating the tapping operations, simplifying design problems and eliminating expensive taps, lockwashers, etc. In addition, he reduced field maintenance problems which, as every outboard user knows, can occur at awkward times!
