Background

The application is fastening a steel, string trimmer deck to a cast aluminum motor. The current fastener, a 3/18-16 ES-FORM case hardened fastener, experienced premature failure in the field. The customer also did not have accurate control over their assembly torque.

Solution

TAPTITE 2000® “SP”™ CORFLEX®-‘N’ (through hardened) fasteners were used in place of the case hardened ES-FORM fasteners.

Customer Benefit

The thread forming to failure torque ratio obtained during testing (11:1), using TAPTITE 2000® “SP”™ CORFLEX®-‘N’ fasteners enabled the customer to set a reasonable assembly torque. Also, the use of CORFLEX®-‘N’, through hardened fasteners into the cast aluminum motor eliminated the possibility of stress corrosion found when using case hardened fasteners into aluminum. All TAPTITE 2000® “SP”™ fasteners tested failed due to stripping of the internal nut threads.
